UAV-based topographic surveys
UAVs and in particular those utilising RTK (real-time kinematic) corrections are a revolutionary tool for topographic surveys. They offer a number of advantages over more conventional methods, such as:
- Accuracy: RTK drones can produce highly accurate topographic survey outputs, with a typical error of less than 2 cm.
- Speed: RTK drones can survey large areas quickly and efficiently.
- Safety: RTK drones can be used to survey dangerous or inaccessible areas without putting personnel at risk.
- Cost: RTK drones are becoming increasingly affordable, making them a cost-effective solution for a wide range of projects.
Prior to the creation of Aquarius Survey & Mapping whilst working at SAERI, Neil Golding led a Darwin funded Coastal Habitat Mapping project (DPLUS065) in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. A spin-off from this work was a collaboration with SafeLane Global to create high resolution topographic digital surface models of minefields dating back to the Falklands conflict to aide their de-mining work (an article on this work can be found here).
ASM have a wealth of expertise and experience completing UAV-based topographic surveys for a wide range of clients. Our diverse portfolio of projects includes the topographic survey of an archaeological site from the Falklands conflict in Stanley, Falkland Islands (known as Bennetts Paddock). We worked with SAERI (Falklands) Ltd (SFL) and Cambridge Archaeological Unit on behalf of the Falkland Islands Museum & National Trust and Falkland Islands Government (FIG)(further details can be found here). More recently, ASM led the UAV element of a pioneering research project funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Tristan da Cunha Government, working with the British Geological Survey, to investigate slope instability and landslides on the remote UK Overseas Territory of Tristan da Cunha.
